Tips to Maintaining Water Heater

Water heater maintenance is one of the most important yet overlooked things home owners need to take care of. When you first move into your new house it is very important that you inspect the water heater and make sure that is working properly. You can also hire someone to do this for you.

If you choose to hire a professional to do this for you, it would be very wise to follow them and watch exactly what they are doing. While they are doing their water heater maintenance ask them as many questions as you can. Take a notebook with you and write everything that they do and tell you down. Next time you will be able to do the water heater maintenance on your own.

There are many different kinds of water heaters on the market today. This site has instructions on how to do water heater maintenance on each different kind of water heater. It is very important that you read through the safety procedures for water heater maintenance and also follow the safety procedures mounted on your water heater and in the manual that should have came with the water heater.

To make the most of this website about water heater maintenance, it is suggested that you choose the type of water heater that you have from the menu bar to your right. Gas water heater maintenance will be a lot different from electric water heater maintenance. That is precisely why this site has a page for each different kind of water heater.

There are some general safety precautions that you should take with every type of water heater. You should never cut corners when it comes to safety, because something very bad could happen. Please think about this one question while doing water heater maintenance. Is it worth saving 2 minutes if I get burned badly? Of course it is not, that is why it is so important to follow these safety procedures and you will get the water heater maintenance done without an accident.

Here are some general safety tips that concern almost every type of water heater.

  • Always make sure that they power is disconnected from the water heater before doing maintenance. It is best if you can unplug the water heater to assure that it has no power to it.
  • Water heaters are hot, you need to make sure that before you lean or grab any part of it, that it is not hot enough to burn you. You can do this by checking the temperature with a thermometer or you can tap the area gently with the back of your hand. When checking if something is hot you should always use the back of your hand. If you use your fingers or the palm of your hand and the object is hot, your hands first reaction is to close. You do not want to close your hand around a pipe that is hot enough to burn you.
  • Always make sure that the area that you are doing water heater maintenance is well lit. One way that people could prevent a lot of accidents while doing hot water maintenance is making sure that they can see what they are doing. Most water heaters are kept in dark areas and a lot of these areas do not have lights. You can set up a work light or have someone hold a flash light so that you have sufficient light to do your water heater maintenance.

Now that you know all about the safety tips to follow it is time to pick the type of water heater that you have so you can begin your water heater maintenance. Please choose your water heater type on the sidebar to your right.

  17. Thumbs up to these tips. During and every maintenance, safety first policy should be observed such as in the case of water heaters which can generate heat enough to scald your skin.

  29. Is installing a water heater easy enough that I could do it myself, or is it safer, easier, and smarter to have someone else come do it for me? I'm trying to learn how to do home maintenance things on my own so that if I ever need to I can do it quickly right when it's needed. Most likely, though, it would be better for a professional to do things like install a water heater.

  34. I didn't think that I had to follow the person that I hired to fix my water heater and keep an eye on them. I thought they were supposed to be capable to do the job themselves. Although, it makes sense to watch them and take notes. That way I can do whatever they do so that I can maintain my water heater without having to hire someone to do the job for me every time.

  35. It sounds a lot easier to maintain a water heater than get it repaired. Because I did not maintain mine I need to repair it now. I just moved to Colombia and am not familiar with the area. 36. Hannah, most of the time it is easier to maintain a water heater than to repair it. As long as you're taking care of it and making sure it runs properly than you'll rarely have to have it repaired. I didn't do that in my last house and ended up having to get it repaired and eventually replaced. So I would suggest maintaining it as well as you can.

  39. I like that you mentioned safety precautions to take. You should put your safety in first place, especially if you will be fixing the water heater yourself. They can really cause some burn damage if you're not careful. They stay hot for a while, so give the water heater enough time to cool down.

  40. I tried to fix my water heater by myself, and it didn't turn out very well for me. I forgot to turn off the power and it caused major damage to the system. I had to get whole new system installed. From now on, I'm going to let a professional handle repairs.

  43. It is extremely important to make sure that water heater repairs are being made properly. It would be really unfortunate to break the water heater in an attempt to fix it. I always contact a technician for any job that can't be completed quickly and easily. Doing this ensures that there is little possibility of things going wrong during the repair.

  44. I couldn't agree more that you should always make sure that the power is disconnected from your water heater before doing any maintenance. I think that a lot of these tips will also apply to any kind of water tank in your home. If you hire a professional to come and do maintenance on your tank, make sure that you watch carefully so that you know what to do the next time. Just make sure that you are careful when unhooking any cables or pipes. http://www.producedirect.com.au

  45. Thank you for the tips. I wish I would have known that they are hot when I was working on mine. I learned my lesson now and won't have to burn my hand again.
